Mindfulness

The Art of Mindful Living

Mindfulness is a way of life. Most commonly associated with meditation, it can also be applied to other areas of your life, such as mindful eating, mindful planning and mindful thinking.

Contrary to some belief, mindfulness and meditation is not always about achieving an 'empty', zenned out mind; mindfulness is about being mindful - awareness and grounding in the now to deal with each moment as it comes. It is highly useful to combat anxiety and/or stress.

You don't have to be 'good' at mindfulness. Mindfulness is a mental practice. I sometimes liken it to going to the gym. I don't enter a gym one day and try to lift the heaviest thing there, and give up when I can't manage it because 'clearly I am not meant to be strong'. Mindfulness, like this gym analogy, is about showing up for yourself every day. You lift those lighter weights until you can tackle the heavier ones, and you keep it up. Some days it's easy, other days it's hard. In fact, the less you feel like you need meditation ("I don't have time for it", "I can't meditate"), the more you need it.

Mindfulness can be associated with, and work well with, a growth mindset; it is helpful for both mental well-being as well as for any ambitions and growth you aspire towards.
